Stars look to tighten up defensively vs. Avalanche tonight

The Dallas Stars take on the Colorado Avalanche again in preseason play tonight and after the Stars almost squandered a four goal lead in Tuesday’s 5-3 victory in Denver, head coach Lindy Ruff wants his team to tighten things up in Thursday’s rematch at American Airlines Center.

“I think we got a little loose in our defensive zone,” Ruff said. “I’d like to see us tighten up some of our plays we allowed late there in the game when we had full control. Part of it was it looked like the game was going to be in our hands and some guys took some chances and tried to get on the board. I think in preseason you try to make an impression, you take some chances and we gave up some opportunities as a team I don’t want to see us giving up when we are leading.”

The Stars will go with an NHL lineup for tonight’s game, and defenseman Stephane Robidas said it is a good time to start developing good habits as a team.

“It’s a matter of us doing the right things, playing hard, playing the system,” Robidas said. “Get to know all the little details we need to do. It’s the details in the game that in the long run will make a difference and we’ve got to start doing those little details right now. The difference between winning and losing is minimal and the team that does the little things over and over and over, it will pay off for them. We have close to a full lineup tonight, we’re missing a few guys, and it’s a matter of doing everything together as a team.”

This is the Stars’ next to last preseason game. They play Edmonton in Oklahoma City on Friday to wrap up exhibition play. There will be player evaluation going on as well in the two contests.

“From an evaluating standpoint, whether it is tonight or tomorrow night, they’re really good games to seat the players where you think they are going to be on the depth chart,” said Ruff, “where they can be here, whether you think they need more games or ice time, being here and playing a little bit versus being in Austin and playing a lot and developing quicker. These two games will be good for looking at that.”

Daley doing better

Stars defenseman Trevor Daley, who is out with an upper body injury, skated today. Whether or not Daley will be ready for the season opener on October 3 is still up in the air, but he does seem to be making progress.

“He’s doing better. Good skate this morning,” said Ruff. “For him it will be an important week to see if he can get back to full par by the time the season starts.”

  1. Any idea where Peverley will fit in?

    • I assume in this lineup he would go into 3rd line LW and Rousell would move into Macdermid’s spot on the fourth line. I think the biggest battle right now is between Garbutt and Sceviour and who will take that fourth line spot.

      • Interesting. I feel like Nichushkin – Chiasson is a pretty good battle, too. Very different roles playing with Eakin and the Wizard versus any of those shutdown guys in the bottom six.

  2. Looking at that line up there, and going by earlier reports of him being able to play on the wing, i would think he could do some damage on the wing. I think Chiasson needs to stick with Whitney, they had some good chemistry last season.

I’m just wondering who is going to be come fidd’s new bash brother with nystrom gone. I always liked watching that line
