Quick recap: Red Wings 3, Stars 0

The Dallas Stars weren’t able to play spoilers Saturday night, falling to the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 at American Airlines Center. The Red Wings clinched a playoff spot with the victory. Henrik Zetterberg led the Detroit attack with two goals and one assist.

Richard Bachman stopped 34 of 37 shots for the Stars, who ended the season on a five game winless streak (0-4-1) and finished with a 22-22-4 record.

First period

It was a fast paced first period with plenty of scoring chances for both teams. The only goal came with 1:43 remaining when Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg shook off a hit from Brenden Dillon and scored when his centering pass bounced off traffic and past Stars goaltender Richard Bachman.

Second period

There was no scoring in the second, but both teams had opportunities on the power play. The Stars had two chances and the Red Wings including had three, including a four-minute power play in the period after Stars forward Ryan Garbutt was called for high sticking. The Stars were able to kill it off to keep it a one-goal game going into the third period.

There was a big scrum at the end of the period after Stars center Vernon Fiddler nailed Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey along the boards. The Red Wings picked up the extra minor and the Stars had a full two minute power play to open the third.

Third period

The Stars opened the third period on the power play, but the Red Wings scored shorthanded to extend their lead to 2-0. Pavel Datsyuk set up Zetterberg, who got behind the Stars defense, broke in alone on net and beat Bachman with a backhand shot at 1:57 of the third.

The  Red Wings made it a 3-0 game at 3:30 of the third when Zetterberg won a battle along the boards, got the puck to Datsyuk and Datsyuk set up Jonathan Ericsson, who scored off a blast from the point.

The Stars came close to scoring with 7:40 remaining, but Red Wings goaltender denied Antoine Roussel’s backhand shot on shorthanded breakaway.

  1. Well if the news is true I think we can finally move forward. I loved Joe Nieuwndyk as a player and will always remember him for his on ice contributions…I will however forget his role as the Stars GM. The very first move he made to fire Tippett and replace him with Crawford irritated me to no end and it went down hill from there. I don’t know anything about Jim Nill but being that he has been in Detroit helping build teams there give me hope that things are truly finally going to turn around. Good luck Joe in what ever comes next…but this just wasn’t working….sorry dude.

    I’m guessing the coaching staff is gone too
