Quotable: Joe Nieuwendyk on trade deadline, Brett Ritchie

Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk talked to the media during the second intermission of tonight’s game against Anaheim about the upcoming trade deadline. He also talked about prospect Brett Ritchie, who has joined the Texas Stars after wrapping up his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League.

On if there’s any news on potential extensions on Jagr, Nystrom or Roy

“I don’t really have any update on that. No.”

On if that would affect how they might deal with things in the next two days

“Yeah, I think so. I think it’s all part of it. Have to see where we’re at. Listening to calls.”

On how hard it is to balance things

“I think so [it’s hard to balance what is being offered and the like]. I think that’s accurate. So we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ve got 48 hours here.”

On Brett Richie joining the AHL team quickly

“He’ll be joining Austin and getting ready to go here.”

On how important it is to Ritchie to play for a team that could go far in the AHL Playoffs

“I think they will. They should. Adding Joe Morrow and now Brett Ritchie, they’ve got a good group of kids there. They’re a good team to watch and I would suspect that they’d make a good run here in the playoffs.”

On what he likes about Ritchie’s game

“What we’ve loved about Brenden Morrow for years I think this guy is a good corner to front of net guy. That’s what he was doing for the World Junior team. He’s a powerful guy and he plays a rugged game.”

On how hard these next few days are for him

“Well, they’re difficult because these are very difficult decisions. They’re never easy.”
