Stars-Blue Jackets: Postgame Quotes

Here are some postgame quotes following the Dallas Stars’ 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena Monday night.

Stars coach Glen Gulutzan on penalties

“If you are going to take eight minors in a game, or nine minors in a game you are probably not going to win. That’s what happened today. We’ve got to be careful with our sticks, we can’t be reaching in the offensive zone. We’re killing ourselves. You can do whatever you want system-wise and play as hard as you want, but if you are going to take that many penalties this is the result.”

Gulutzan on the game

“I thought we had a real good first period, scored on the power play and then a barrage of penalties put us back on our heels. But we got them killed. I thought our killers did a fantastic job of killing those penalties off, but then we get away from the game plan. We start turning pucks over and instead of them losing momentum from the kills, they gain momentum because we give it to them. (Alex) Goligoski turns it over at the blue, (Tom) Wandell turns it over at the blue and then we make a bad change and they score.”

Stars forward Jamie Benn

“We did a lot better job in our D zone in the first period. We need to stay out of the box, it kind of turned momentum around tonight. That’s probably the biggest thing.”

Benn on his first game with Loui Eriksson and Jaromir Jagr

“We just tried to keep it simple, maybe a little too many turnovers tonight. We just need to get pucks deep. We’ve got some big forwards on our line, so we’ve got to take advantage of that down low and play to our strength.”

Columbus coach Todd Richards

“In the first period, we could create no momentum out of our power play. It was killing us. It sucked the life right out of us. … In the second period, it created that buzz. We had three or four real good chances on that power play, and it got the fans back into it. It created some momentum, and our game got a lot better after that.”

Columbus forward Vinny Prospal on his game-winning goal

“I knew there was traffic in front of the net, and I just wanted to get it on the net. Shoot for the pads, get a rebound, it may go in, you never know. Look what happened, it went in. It was a huge two points for us.”
