The Dallas Stars wrapped up six days of practices Friday morning, and now it is on to opening night against the Phoenix Coyotes at American Airlines Center on Saturday night.
The Stars trimmed their roster to 23 players Friday morning, sending goaltender Richard Bachman and defenseman Jamie Oleksiak to the Texas Stars of the AHL.
That means Cristopher Nilstorp will start the season as the backup to Kari Lehtonen.
“It’s that same thought process we had before, (Nilstorp) has played 30 games,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “If you look at Richard Bachman throughout this camp, he was fantastic. There’s no reading anything into it other than we felt that instead of throwing two goalies that haven’t played a game into the fire, it’s better to have one of them get a couple of games in. That’s what Bachs is going to do. He’s going to go down and get a couple of games in, and you’ll probably see Nilstorp get a start in one of these first three games. We feel he’s played well enough to earn a start.”
Lehtonen will get the start Saturday night against Phoenix.
Injury notes: Rome questionable
Defenseman Aaron Rome (groin) practiced on Friday. Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said he expects Rome to play a game this weekend, but wasn’t sure if it would be Saturday against the Coyotes.
“It will be close. It will be close,” Gulutzan said. “If I had to guess I would say one game this weekend, to be just a little precautionary. I talked to him today and he said it’s gotten better every day, but we had a five-day training camp and he missed two. It could be tough and we don’t want to rush those things.”
Stars captain Brenden Morrow left practice Friday after a mid-ice collision with defenseman Philip Larsen. After practice, Morrow, who had a scrape on his face, said he was fine.
“I probably won’t be able to shave for a week,” Morrow said with a laugh, adding that he would be ready to play on Saturday. “No problem.”
