World Jr. Notes: USA, Russia advance to semifinals

The United States moved into the semifinal round at the World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia Wednesday with a 7-0 victory over Czech Republic.

The Americans led 1-0 after one period, and then blew the game open with a five-goal second period. John Gaudreau led the USA attack with three goals. Plano native Seth Jones and Jacob Trouba both had four assists.

Team USA will take on Canada and Dallas Stars prospect Brett Ritchie in the semis on Thursday.

Stars prospect Radek Faksa had no points, no shots on goal and even rating for the Czechs on Wednesday. He won 13 of 20 faceoffs in the game. The Czechs will play Switzerland for fifth place in the tournament on Friday

Russia also moved into the semifinal round, defeating Switzerland, 4-3, in a shootout on Wednesday. Russia’s Nikita Kucherov scored on the power play with 1:39 remaining to tie the game, and then scored the shootout-winner.

Russia will play Sweden and Stars prospect Emil Molin in the semifinals on Thursday.
