Training camp gets underway Thursday in Fort Worth

The Dallas Stars headed to Fort Worth late this afternoon and will hit the ice at the Fort Worth Convention Center Thursday morning to kick off the on-ice part of the team’s 2014 training camp.

The players underwent physicals on Wednesday. There was some media work to be done as well, including photos, and video shoots for some players. Players and other team personnel hopped on buses in Frisco late in the afternoon and headed to Fort Worth, where they will practice and scrimmage Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Stars open preseason play Sunday against St. Louis at American Airlines Center.

The players, who have been skating informally the past couple of weeks, are excited to get going, especially with all the changes that have happened with the team since the end of last season.

“To me it’s like a fresh start,” Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas said. “We’re starting from scratch, it’s new. We’ve got a new GM, new coach, new D coach, new jerseys and new players. It’s a lot of new things, but it’s all positive and certainly interesting. I think we are headed in the right direction. That’s a very good thing.”

There are 54 players on the Stars’ training camp roster – 30 forwards, 18 defensemen and 6 goaltenders. They are split into three different groups, each consisting of 10 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goaltenders.

Stars coach Lindy Ruff said you shouldn’t read anything into how the players are grouped together to begin camp.

“No, not at all. We’ve tried to split up an equal number of players from NHL to the American League players to the junior players,” said Ruff. “There will be an odd number, one team will get to scrimmage twice the first few days and then when we have that main scrimmage on Saturday, we’ll probably go a little bit deeper with the players that have been around.”

The one-ice work begins at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

  1. Would I be right in assuming that Brendan Ranford is the son of Bill & Max Lagace the son J. P. ??

  2. Brendan Ranford is Bill Ranford’s nephew. Not sure about Lagace.

  3. Seems like we’re really set up the middle, but we seem kind of thin on Right wing. Are any of those centers moving over?
