Jack Campbell will get the start in goal this evening when the Dallas Stars open the NHL Prospect Tournament against the St. Louis Blues. Game time is 6 p.m. Central Time.
Campbell and the Stars prospects practiced this morning at the Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. Among the practice lines were a trio of Valeri Nichushkin, Radek Faksa and Alex Chiasson. Another line featured Curtis McKenzie, Brendan Ranford and Brett Ritchie.
The defensemen playing tonight will be Jamie Oleksiak, Jyrki Jokipakka, Patrik Nemeth, John Klingberg, Etienne Boutet and Troy Vance.
The Stars have lineups mapped out for the entire tournament. All three goaltenders – Campbell, Philippe Desrosiers and Maxime Lagace will get starts. Each of the skaters will get at least two games and some will suit up for all four games.
“You can’t read anything into who is playing and who is not playing,” said Texas Stars coach Willie Desjardins, who is coaching the Dallas prospects at the tournament. “We’ve got extra guys and not everybody can play. That’s the only reason.”
The Stars bring an impressive roster to this year’s tournament. It features five first round picks and six second round selections.
“We have lots of nice players,” Desjardins said. “I think the organization has done a great job of drafting and gathering players. There are some really talented players in our group.”
The Stars are one of the most talented teams in Traverse City, but they know in a short tournament anything can happen.
“Obviously on paper we are a pretty good team, but you’ve got to get together pretty quick,” said Ritchie. “Any team can win it. We’ve got to give it our best shot and try to jell as quickly as we can.”
