The highlight of development camp today was an afternoon scrimmage, but two of the top prospects at the camp were not on the ice.
Forward Valeri Nichushkin, the Stars’ first round pick (10th overall) in this summer’s draft, did not skate today due to an ankle issue.
“He has an ankle injury. His skates hurt his feet and stuff,” said Stars GM Jim Nill. “He didn’t have his skates here, we tried to fit him in some and it didn’t work. We didn’t want it to get any worse.”
Nichushkin did have new skates arrive today.
Forward Radek Faksa, the Stars first round pick (13th overall) in 2012, sat out after getting hit in the face with a stick earlier in the day.
Today’s scrimmage lasted an hour. Nill watched from the stands.
“I’m not sitting here judging the players. I just want to see guys that work hard,” Nill said. “I’ve been watching them all week and for this time of year they put a lot into it. It’s tough. You go from zero miles per hour to all of a sudden 100 miles per hour by getting on the ice. These guys are competitive, they want to show what they can do and it’s hard on their bodies.”
Here’s about six minutes of video from the scrimmage.
