The Dallas Stars hopes of making the Western Conference playoffs came to an end Thursday night. The Stars were eliminated when Detroit defeated Nashville, 5-2. The Stars then lost, 3-1, to Columbus at American Airlines Center. Jamie Benn scored the lone goal for Dallas. Kari Lehtonen stopped 32 shots. The Blue Jackets, who got two goals from Cam Atkinson and 31 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky, kept their playoff hopes alive with the victory.
Red Wings victory eliminates Stars
The Stars were eliminated from the playoff race with a little more than seven minutes left in the second period when Detroit defeated Nashville, 5-2, at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit needed to lose in regulation for the Stars to stay alive in the playoff race.
The Blue Jackets scored 19 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Brandon Dubinsky put a shot on net and Cam Atkinson scored off the ensuing scramble.
The Stars had a good chance to tie, but Sergei Bobrovsky stopped a close range bid by Erik Cole off the rush.
The Blue Jackets had a great chance to extend the lead, but Kari Lehtonen stopped a Marian Gaborik breakaway.
The Stars were 0-1 on the power play in the period and the Blue Jackets were 0-2.
After Stars forward Eric Nystrom nailed Columbus forward R.J. Umberger with an open ice hit, Nystrom and Dalton Prout dropped the gloves in a spirited bout.
Lehtonen kept it a 1-0 game, stopping Umberger as he broke in alone on net with just over 16 minutes left in the period.
About 30 seconds Lehtonen denied a rebound attempt by Atkinson from close range.
The Stars went on their second power play of the game at 7:36 of the second and cashed in to tie the game at 1-1. Erik Cole put a shot on net off the rush and Jamie Benn banged the rebound past Bobrovsky at the 8:43 mark.
Stars forward Lane MacDermid and Columbus forward Jared Boll dropped the gloves with 8:09 left in the period.
About one minute later the Stars were officially eliminated from the playoff race when the Detroit Red Wings defeated Nashville.
The Stars had some great pressure and some good chances over the final few minutes of the period, but couldn’t get a puck past Bobrovsky and the game headed to the third period tied 1-1.
The Blue Jackets went on a power play at 7:53 of the third period and scored three seconds into it. After a faceoff win by Dubinsky, Mark Letestu’s shot from the point deflected off traffic and by Lehtonen to give Columbus a 2-1 lead.
Bobrovsky came up with a big stop on a Ray Whitney shot from the slot with just under ten minutes remaining to keep it a 2-1 game.
Antoine Roussel had a good chance on the backhand with just under five minutes left, but Bobrovsky stuck out his pad to turn that one away.
The Blue Jackets went on a power play with 2:49 remaining and holding a 2-1 lead in the game and Atkinson scored to put the Blue Jackets up 3-1.
