Dallas Stars players worked out off the ice today in Frisco. The news of the morning was that the Stars recalled defenseman Jordie Benn from the Texas Stars. Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said there are no injury issues on defense and that the team wants an extra defenseman in the mix right now.
“Seven D is good to have,” Gulutzan said. “At the end of the day, we can’t run here with six because you are a sickness way from five. We get Jordie back, he’s been here most of the year and we’ll see what we do for our roster tomorrow. We haven’t made any final decisions.”
There was no update on forward Lane MacDermid, who missed Sunday’s game with an upper body injury. MacDermid went to the doctor this morning, so the Stars should get an update later today.
With two wins in a row the Stars have moved up a bit in the standings. They now sit tenth in the Western Conference, four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot. Gulutzan said the team has remained positive despite the ups and downs of the past couple weeks.
“They were never too down. Obviously, you don’t like falling out. There are a lot of positives in this room, there is a lot of work, there is a lot of pride,” Gulutzan said. “We’re just playing one game at a time. We’re going to play as hard as we can every game. We’re not going to get caught up looking at the standings, we just want to make sure we are competing night in and night out.”
Alex Chiasson enjoying the ride
Forward Alex Chiasson has been making the most of his call up to the NHL. He scored his first NHL goal in Wednesday’s win in Anaheim. He scored two goals in Sunday’s 5-4 shootout victory over the San Jose Sharks. The 2nd round pick (38th overall) in 2009 is in a good pretty good spot right now, playing right wing on a line with Ray Whitney and Jamie Benn.
“It’s been special, of course. I’m just starting to soak this in, being a sponge and trying to get the best out of this experience. And of course, once you are up here you want to stay,” Chiasson said. “I can’t complain right now, I am playing with two All-Stars. They’ve been really good to me and everybody has been really good to me around here. This has been a really good experience for me. I am really enjoying this.”
Whitney said there is a lot of like about Chiasson.
“I know everybody looks at the goals, but it is his overall game that is more impressive,” Whitney said. “He gets goals by going to the net. All three of them are him driving to the net. His play with the puck in our own zone and protecting the puck in the offensive zone has been very good. He’s a big body and a better skater than I initially thought he was.”
