Wednesday update: Stars upbeat, ready to move forward after trades

The new look Dallas Stars are back in action tonight, taking on the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center in the second game of their three-game mini-series here in the final month of the regular season.

The Stars’ roster looks a lot different than when the two teams met in Dallas on Monday. Jaromir Jagr was traded to Boston on Tuesday. Derek Roy was shipped to Vancouver.

Now in the mix are forwards Matt Fraser and Alex Chiasson, called up from the Texas Stars, and forward Lane MacDermid, acquired from Boston in the Jagr deal.

“We lost two well-liked players, but we’ve got a lot of young guys in here and the mood of the team is upbeat,” said Stars coach Glen Gulutzan. “We’re ready to keep moving forward. It’s been a real upbeat morning.”

Despite the loss of two top six forwards, Gulutzan said the Stars aren’t waving the white flag on the season.

“Absolutely not. Absolutely not,” Gulutzan said. “We see ourselves in a different light, a different style of game that will help us move forward here and get into this playoff race. There is some real optimism in that locker room.”

Stars forward Eric Nystrom wasn’t waving the white flag either.

“Absolutely not,” Nystrom said. “We brought up some young guys that are going to definitely play the type of game that we need to be successful. We lost two really skilled offensive guys, but we have young guys coming in that are going to play that north game that we want, that are going to drive the net and play the right way. They’ve been successful this year, so it’s a great opportunity for them and I am just excited to get their energy in here and see them play well.”

Notes: Fiddler, Garbutt could play tonight; defense juggling

*Center Vernon Fiddler (charley horse) and left wing Ryan Garbutt (hand) could both return to the lineup tonight. Fiddler has missed two games and Garbutt has missed the last nine games. Both will be game-time decisions.

*It appears the Stars will juggle the defense pairings tonight. They are expected to go with Brenden Dillon-Alex Goligoski; Trevor Daley-Stephane Robidas; Aaron Rome-Philip Larsen. Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said he wanted to move Daley to the left side. Daley had been playing on the right side with Goligoski.

*Kari Lehtonen will start in goal tonight.

Transactions: Sceviour, Jordie Benn sent to AHL

The Stars sent defenseman Jordie Benn and right wing Colton Sceviour to the Texas Stars of the AHL Wednesday afternoon.  The Stars also sent Matt Fraser and Alex Chiasson to Texas and then recalled them a short time later. The transactions ensured that all four players are eligible to participate in the AHL’s Calder Cup Playoffs.
