New guys in the lineup: MacDermid scores first NHL goal
Alex Chiasson and Matt Fraser, called up from the Texas Stars on the Tuesday, and Lane MacDermid, acquired from Boston on Tuesday, all were in the lineup Wednesday against the Ducks.
MacDermid played 6:40 and scored his first NHL goal in the game, tallying from the right faceoff circle with 1:24 left in the game. He had two hits as well. MacDermid played left wing on a line with Vernon Fiddler and Ryan Garbutt.
Chiasson played 13:38, had two shots on goal and three hits. He opened the game on a line with Antoine Roussel and Cody Eakin.
Fraser logged 14:14 of ice time and had no shots on goal and one hit. He played on a line with Ray Whitney and Loui Eriksson to start the game.
Fiddler, Garbutt return
Vernon Fiddler and Ryan Garbutt both returned from injury Wednesday night. Fiddler missed two games with a charley horse. Garbutt missed nine games with a hand injury.
After a bit of a scrambly start, the Stars had a strong first period in Anaheim but were down 1-0 after the first 20 minutes.
The lone goal of the period came at the 11:44 mark. With a delayed penalty call on the Stars, Ryan Getzlaf came on the ice as the extra attacker for the Ducks and sent a cross-ice pass to Radek Dvorak, who scored into the open side of the net from close range.
The Stars had a couple of good chances after that, but a close range shot by Eric Nystrom and a deflection by Alex Chiasson were stopped by Ducks goaltender Viktor Fasth.
About 30 seconds after Fasth made a nice save on a Ryan Garbutt bid from the left circle, the Ducks went on the game’s first power play and cashed in to take a 2-0 lead.
Ryan Getzlaf’s pass deflected off Brenden Dillon’s stick and ended up on the stick of Teemu Selanne, who ripped a shot past Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen at the 11:33 mark.
The Ducks made it a 3-0 game at the 16:38 mark. Peter Holland won a puck battle behind the net and slipped the puck to Kyle Palmieri, who then drove the net and slipped the puck past Lehtonen.
The Stars scored at 2:48 into the third when Vernon Fiddler sent a pass from behind the net to Erik Cole, who was driving the net and scored from close range. The goal snapped a 111:44 scoreless streak for the Stars.
The Ducks got their three-goal lead back at the 10:30 mark with a goal off the rush. Corey Perry slipped a pass between Stephane Robidas’ legs and Getzlaf finished off the play by scoring off a backhand shot from the left circle.
Garbutt set up Lane MacDermid, who scored from the right circle with 1:24 remaining.
Andrew Cogliano scored into an empty net in the final seconds to make it a 5-2 final.
