Stars-Kings: Postgame quotes

Here are some postgame quotes following the Dallas Stars’ 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center Thursday night.

Stars coach Glen Gulutzan

“This is one where your goalie saves you in the first 40 and we picked up in the last 20. Certainly, Kari kept us in.”

“It was a back-to-back and in back-to-backs you need your goalie to be good and he was tonight. Our goalie was our best player.”

“If you can weather that storm, at some point the tide will change. Our goalie kept us in and I knew we’d get our legs going in the third a little bit because you are in a position to have success and get a little jump from that.”

Gulutzan on Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney scoring the big goals in the game

“That’s why you have them. They’re stingers. It doesn’t take them much to sting you. You saw that tonight, they don’t need many to get it. You look at other guys, third and fourth line guys, they’ve to create ten chances to score a goal. These guys don’t, they just need one or two.”

Gulutzan on juggling lines in the third period

“We’ll probably go back to the same lines we used. We juggled in the third to create some friction and energy. It worked. We talked a lot about line changes, and we don’t like to do it too much, but in this type of game, when you are taking in that much water, sometimes you need to change things up.”

Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen

“They had a lot of good chances, but sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don’t. It was nice to get a few of those bounces tonight. We’ve had it rough the past couple of weeks, so it was nice.”

Lehtonen on his teammates limiting second chances against

“That was huge and I think our penalty kill did a great job, too. It was a good road effort. We had a little hard time there, but we were able to hang in there and get those goals and that helped out a lot.”

Stars forward Jaromir Jagr on what he’s thinking on his goal

“Deke two guys and top shelf. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. But that is what I am thinking all the time.”

Jagr on Kari Lehtonen’s performance

“We didn’t have a practice this morning so we wanted to give him some extra shots, and it worked well for us. He doesn’t have to work out after the game because he worked out during the game. That was our plan and it worked. Not all the time, but today it did.”

Jagr on the second period, when the Kings outshot the Stars 18-10

“It wasn’t fun. I don’t think I touched the puck once. We were playing champions, we weren’t playing well lately and we knew it might happen. Kari was just fantastic and gave us a chance in the third period. We kind of settled down and started playing a little bit better.”

Kings coach Darryl Sutter on running into a hot goaltender

“Didn’t cash in. Got shut out, so you could say he’s hot, but we didn’t cash in. I mean, we had lots of opportunities that we didn’t quite complete. It’s too bad, because we worked hard.”

Sutter on Jaromir Jagr

“He left as a superstar, and came back as a star. Just a little hiatus in there. I don’t think age is a factor for guys like that as long as you’re healthy and well-trained and still have a great desire to play.”
