The Texas Stars picked up five of a possible six points (2-0-1-0) over the past week, bolstering their lead in the AHL’s Western Conference with a 35-16-5-6 record.
The Stars have a four-point lead in both the Western Conference and the South Division. Their 81 points rank second in the AHL and their .653 points percentage ranks second as well.
Wednesday March 13, Abbotsford at Texas: Stars 4, Heat 3
Texas snapped a five-game winless streak with a 4-3 win over Abbotsford at Cedar Park Center. Mike Hedden scored two goals for Texas. Matt Fraser and William Wrenn also scored. Alex Chiasson and Justin Dowling each had two assists. Texas lost goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp early in the second period after he was run into by Heat forward Mike Testwuide. Jack Campbell played the rest of the way and stopped 17 of 18 shots. Nilstorp, who stopped eight of ten shots, picked up the victory.
Friday March 15, Texas at Charlotte: Stars 7, Checkers 3
Colton Sceviour and Travis Morin each scored two goals for the Stars, who rank their points streak to three games (2-0-0-1) with a 7-3 win at Charlotte, at team chasing them in both the Western Conference and South Division. Francis Wathier, Carl Sneep and Toby Petersen also scored. Campbell stopped 26 of 29 shots.
Saturday March 16, Texas at Charlotte: Checkers 3, Stars 2 (OT)
The Stars came up short in the second of their two-game set against Charlotte, falling 3-2 in overtime. Fraser and Hedden scored in regulation for the Stars, but Chris Terry’s goal 2:53 into overtime gave the Checkers the extra point. Campbell stopped 22 of 25 shots. With the point, the Stars were able hold a four-point lead over the Checkers in both the Western Conference and South Division standings.

Campbell gets called up to NHL
Goaltender Jack Campbell, Dallas’ first round pick (11th overall) in 2010, got his first call up to the NHL on Tuesday.
“It’s exciting. I’ve worked really hard to get this opportunity,” Campbell said Tuesday afternoon. “It’s great to get called up and I am just trying to absorb everything. Just the skate here this morning, I feel I am getting better and learning. It will be a lot of fun to be up here with these guys. “
Campbell, who is in his first full season of professional hockey, is 14-10-3 with Texas. He has a 2.59 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. It’s not clear if he’ll get into a game, but Campbell said he’ll be ready if called upon by Dallas.
“Absolutely,” Campbell said. “I’d like to say I’ve worked as hard as any other for this. I am 100 percent confident in my game and this team. I just want to help this team whether I am on the bench or other than that.”
Fraser heating up
Texas forward Matt Fraser picked up points in all three games last week, extending his points streak to five games (five goals, two assists).
Fraser has 29 goals in 57 games this season and is tied for second in the AHL in goal scoring. His 14 power play goals are tops in the league.
Heat forward suspended for hit on Nilstorp
The AHL suspended Abbotsford Heat forward Mike Testwuide three games for charging Texas Stars goalie Cristopher Nilstorp in the March 13 game in Cedar Park. The incident happened at 5:05 of the second period. Nilstorp left the game with a head injury.
G Cristopher Nilstorp, D Patrik Nemeth and LW Luke Gazdic are the Texas Stars currently out with injuries.
