The Dallas Stars opened a three-game homestand with a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames Sunday evening. The Stars had a 3-1 lead after two periods, but the Flames scored three times in the third to secure the victory. Antoine Roussel, Reilly Smith and Ryan Garbutt scored for the Stars, who fell to 8-7-1 on the season. Richard Bachman stopped 22 of 26 shots.
Flames rally in third
After seeing the Stars score three times in the second period to take a 3-1 lead in the game, Calgary scored three times in the second to rally for the victory. Roman Horak and Matt Stajan scored 45 seconds apart early in the period and Steve Begin scored the game-winner with 9:30 remaining.
Stars’ streak ends
Sunday’s loss ended a 79-game streak (71-0-8) of the Stars picking up at least one point when they led after two periods. The last time the Stars did not get at least one point when leading after two periods was October 31, 2009 vs. Nashville.
Stars defenseman Trevor Daley left the game late in the second period and did not return. The Stars announced he had an upper body injury.
The Stars took back-to-back penalties just before the midway point of the first, giving the Flames a brief five-on-three power play. The Flames cashed in just after the two-man advantage expired when Mike Cammalleri beat Richard Bachman with a shot from the bottom of the right circle, putting the Flames up 1-0 at 8:11 mark of the first.
The Stars had two power plays in the first, including one that carried over into the second period.
Ryan Garbutt and Calgary’s Steve Begin dropped the gloves in the first.
The Stars couldn’t cash in on 55 seconds of power play time to open the second period, but they scored two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead in the game.
A Cody Eakin shot deflected off Antoine Roussel and into the net at the 1:51 mark to tie the game. Just 56 seconds later Reilly Smith scored off the rebound of his shot to give the Stars a 2-1 lead.
The Stars killed off a couple of Calgary power plays, then missed on their third power play chance of the game, but extended the lead to 3-1 late in the second. Ryan Garbutt scored on the rebound of a Stephane Robidas shot off the rush with 4:37 left in the second to make it a 3-1 game.
After registering just four shots in the first period, the Stars put 22 shots on goal in the second.
The Stars announced at the beginning of the second period that Trevor Daley was out for the rest of the game with an upper body injury.
The Flames tied the game early in the third with two goals in a span of 45 seconds. Roman Horak scored on shot that rebounded off Stars defenseman Aaron Rome at the 1:39 mark. A wide open Matt Stajan scored from close range and the 2:24 mark to tie the game at 3-3.
Calgary took a 4-3 lead with 9:30 left in the game when Steve Begin knocked home the rebound of a Chris Butler shot from the point.
