Stars looking for net presence tonight in Detroit

After getting shut out in Minnesota Sunday, the Stars will be looking to generate some offense Tuesday night in Detroit and that means getting to the net.

“We had a conversation today, as a group, that we didn’t get to the net well against Minnesota,” said Stars coach Glen Gulutzan. “We had perimeter shots and we had 26 blocked. We weren’t establishing a good net presence. You watch Detroit, San Jose, teams in our conference, you’ve got to get to the net. .. We’ve got to get to the net better.”

There are no expected changes in the Stars lineup tonight other than Kari Lehtonen will be back in goal.  Gulutzan said he will probably roll out the same line combinations, but there could be some shuffling during the game.

“We’ll probably start the same way, but regardless of what we do or what the score is, we may shuffle things around to not give us more balance, but for that net presence is something maybe we can spread around.”

That could include giving Cody Eakin, who has been centering the fourth line, a bigger role.

“Cody Eakin is in the forefront of our mind,” Gulutzan said. “All those young guys are because they give you energy.”

Injury notes: Rome still out

Defenseman Aaron Rome will miss his third straight game with a groin injury. Gulutzan said Rome could play when the Stars return home late this week.

“We want to put Romer in a situation where we can control the minutes and the matchups. Every day he has improved dramatically, so we are looking at Thursday or Saturday,” Gulutzan said.

Left wing Ray Whitney is dealing with a sore foot, but he is expected to play tonight.

“He should be good to go,” Gulutzan said. “He thinks he is ready to go.”

Banged up Red Wings sign D Huskins

The injuries continue to pile up for the Detroit Red Wings. D Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder) and F Mikael Samuelsson (groin) were injured in last night’s game in Columbus. The Red Wings signed free agent defenseman Kent Huskins Tuesday morning.

The Red Wings, already missing defensemen Jonathan Ericsson (shoulder) and Jakub Kindl (groin), are hopeful Huskins will be able to play tonight.

With Samuelsson going out of the lineup, Detroit recalled forward Gustav Nyquist from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

The Red Wings are missing injured forwards Todd Bertuzzi (illness), and F Darren Helm (back) as well for tonight’s game.

Jimmy Howard, who was in net last night for the Red Wings, will get the start again.

One Response to “Stars looking for net presence tonight in Detroit”

  1. Good all around game from the boys. Kari played lights out to match the play by Howard.
On a side note, I was and still am a big Ott fan. I was concerned about what I was told about Roy and his game. After the first few games I am a Roy fan. He shoots, works hard and brings energy every shift. I still wish we had Ott but I am defiantly likening Roy and his game.

    Go Stars!
