Stars-Coyotes: Postgame quotes

Here are some postgame quotes following the Dallas Stars 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes at American Airlines Center Saturday night.

Stars forward Jaromir Jagr on registering four points in his Dallas debut

“It was special. The first game is always special. It was strange. We only had one week in training camp and I’ve got to get used to the new teammates. We didn’t have a chance to play any games in the preseason.  Practice is different than the games. Hopefully it is going to get better as I play more with my linemates.”

Stars coach Glen Gulutzan on Jaromir Jagr

“That was a pretty good one. I don’t think you could ask for much more. A 4-3 win and four points from Jags. He’s a big reason we got two tonight. I’ll tell you the most impressive part is with 30-some seconds left, as I was waiting for the line change, he tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘Make sure we have two centers out there.’  He could have gone for a third (goal) with an empty net, but that wasn’t his mindset; his mindset was get the points.”

Stars captain Brenden Morrow on the victory

“We jumped on No. 68’s coattails a little bit tonight. He had a big debut for us. It was a big two points. It wasn’t the cleanest game we’re going to play all year, there was a lot of sloppy play, we’ll clean that up and we’re happy to get out of here with two points. “

Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas on the contributions of offseason acquistions Jagr, Ray Whitney (one goal, one assist), Derek Roy (one assist)

“It’s always good, especially with these guys to come in…. We knew what kind of players we were getting when they got them this summer. I’ve played against those guys and they’re extremely talented players. They compete hard and they just bring a different element to our team.”

Coyotes forward Radim Vrbata on the game

“Well, it was the first game. I think nobody knew what to expect. It was a game of mistakes. We just made one more than them or they just capitalized on one more than we did. Everybody knew the first couple games there would be mistakes made. Those were mistakes that we don’t usually make as a team. Hopefully we will learn from that.”

Coyotes coach Dave Tippett on game one mistakes

“Both teams gave each other some gifts and we ended up giving one more. That’s a tough way to lose. That’s uncharacteristic for our team. Certainly we have to clean up some of those areas.”
