Texas Stars fall in shootout, 2-1

The Texas Stars picked up one point Saturday night to run their points streak to six games, but they couldn’t get the second point as they fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Abbotsford Heat.

The Stars, who picked up three of four points in their weekend series against Western Conference leading Abbotsford, are now 4-0-1-1 in their last six games and 7-1-1-1 over their last ten.

Matt Fraser scored the lone goal of the game for Texas. Jack Campbell, making his first start since December 1, stopped 25 of 26 shots in regulation and overtime, and then made two saves on five shots in the shootout.

Krys Kolanos scored the lone goal for the Heat, and scored the shootout winner. Abbotsford goaltender Barry Brust stopped 39 of 40 shots in the game, and then three of five in the shootout.

There was no scoring in the first period, during which the Stars outshot the Heat by a 16-9 margin.

The Stars went on a 1:53 five-on-three power play early in the second period, and cashed in to take a 1-0 lead. Jordie Benn set up Fraser, who scored off a one-timer from the top of the right circle at the 5:13 mark.

The Heat drew even less than three minutes later by taking advantage of their second power play of the game. Ben Street threw a  cross-ice pass from the right boards to Krys Kolanos, who put the puck into the open side of the net at 8:07 of the second.

A scoreless third period and overtime sent the game to the shootout, where T.J. Brodie, Roman Horak and Kolanos all scored for the Heat, and Tomas Vincour and Benn scored for the Stars.

Notes

*The Stars announced prior to Saturday’s game that they released defenseman Cam Barker from his 25-game professional tryout contract.

*With Barker gone, Tyler Sloan was back in the lineup for the first time since December 1. The Stars now have six defensemen on the roster, meaning they will likely make an addition in the days ahead.

*Matt Fraser’s goal was his 10th of the season, which has him tied for 21st in the AHL.

*Fraser left the game in the second period after colliding with a linesman, but returned for the start of the third period and finished the game.

*Cody Eakin has registered a point in five of the last six games and has 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) during that stretch.

*Jack Campbell is 1-2 in shootouts this season, and has stopped 11 of 18 shootout attempts (.611).

*The Stars are 5-0-0-1 when scoring the first goal of the game.

*Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn, brother of Texas defenseman Jordie Benn, attended Saturday night’s game.
